This certifies that the holder has a basic understanding of the ITIL principles: the terminology, the Service Desk function, the ten core processes and their relationships and interfaces with other processes and the business.

The candidate should have a basic working knowledge of IT. The ISEB recommends that all candidates attend an ISEB approved training course run by an accredited Training Provider.
Candidates should note that the overall public exam pass rates are notably lower than for candidates who have attended an accredited training course.

This is a one hour closed book examination consisting of forty questions with multiple choice answers. The pass mark is 26/40.
The examination is taken typically at the end of a two or three day course.It can also be taken without any other prerequisite, as a computer-based exam at Prometric.
